Move into the Light!

Move into the Light!

It was a typical winter morning in Melbourne. Cold, but sunny. One of those days where the chill in the air is countered by that sharp, brilliant sunlight we sometimes get here.

I was at home, sitting in the back room. It’s one of my favourite spots in the house. Large, north-facing windows let the sun pour in and fill the space with a beautiful, tangible warmth.

That morning I was journaling, taking some time to pause and simply be. The quiet was welcome. The warmth was real. I felt calm and at peace.

Then suddenly, I felt cold.

I hadn’t moved at all, but the sun had. It had slipped behind one of the pillars of our house, and just like that, the warmth was gone. I was now sitting in the shade.

It was a small moment. Seemingly insignificant. But as I sat there, I heard something. Not audibly, but words as clear as day: “Move into the light.”

I didn’t argue. I stood up, slid my chair about a metre to the side, and sat back down. I was in the sun again. Ah, the light and the warmth. Life flowing to and through me again.

I then realised this wasn’t just a physical relocation. It was a message, and in many ways, a mystical one. It felt like a whisper from the Divine to move into the light. I wrote it down in my journal. It affected me in the moment, but the experience has lingered for days … and I’ve come back to it many times since.

That simple phrase became a guiding idea for me. Not just for that day, but for a whole season of life. It reminded me that we often settle into the shadows without even realising it. We sit still while the light shifts. We grow accustomed to cold places. But there is always an invitation to move.

Move away from things that are now dark, draining, and cold. Activities, practices, and even relationships that are no longer life-giving.

Move towards things that are light, life, and warmth. Activities, practices, and people who are.

Such a simple phrase, yet so full of meaning: move into the light.

What about you?

Have you had a moment like that. Something you might even consider a Divine nudge? It could have come as a word, a feeling, an impression, a picture, or simply through the ordinary circumstances of your life. Often we’re waiting for the spectacular, when really, we just need to learn to notice what’s already speaking to us.

I’ve come to believe the sacred isn’t confined to mountaintop moments or church buildings. It shows up in a back room on a cold morning. In the shift of sunlight across a floor. In a quiet impression while we’re journaling, walking the dog, or standing at the sink. The Divine is closer, and more woven into ordinary life, than most of us realise, if we can just slow down enough to see it.

This is the invitation at the heart of my new book, Everyday Experiences of the Divine: to become more present, more attentive, more awake to the small, still voice beneath the noise of daily life, and to recognise that many of our most meaningful spiritual moments aren’t found in the extraordinary at all, but hiding in plain sight, in the everyday.

If that resonates, I’d love for you to join me on this journey. Everyday Experiences of the Divine is out now in paperback, eBook, and PDF formats.

And in the meantime, wherever you find yourself today: if you’ve drifted into the shade without noticing, maybe it’s time to slide your chair back into the light.
